Surviving Airport Madness: Lessons from a Comfort Dog

We swung into Will Rogers Airport tonight thinking we’d breeze through. Nope. The place looked like someone kicked over an anthill. Flights were delayed, diverted, and possibly hiding from us out on the tarmac.

The departure board was having a full meltdown — every line blinking DELAYED like it was trolling us. People were camped around outlets like they were defending territory. A toddler was screaming. A businessman was arguing with physics. Someone’s emotional‑support dog had emotionally checked out.

Announcements crackled overhead with the enthusiasm of a tired substitute teacher: “Flight 247… is… not happening right now.”

Despite the chaos, everyone slowly bonded over the shared misery. Snacks were traded. Rumors were swapped. We all became one big, exhausted airport family.

A Little Paw-Mail from Holly!

Hi friends, it’s me — Holly, your favorite comfort crew dog. I had a very busy day, and I need to tell you all about it before I fall asleep on my human’s feet.

Today started with my human’s cataract follow‑up, and the results are in. Drum roll… paw roll… tail wag… 🥁🐾

He can no longer see cats. In either eye.

Honestly, this is the best medical news I’ve heard all year. 🎉 No more cats. No more pretending to like cats. Now he can finally focus on what truly matters in life: ME — his very large, very important comfort dog. 🐶💁‍♀️

The office staff rushed over like I was a celebrity sighting. They petted me, told me I was pretty, and smelled faintly of snacks. I love those girls.

Airport Chaos (AKA: My Time to Shine)

We headed to Will Rogers Airport next, and WOW — it looked like someone shook the human snow globe. Flights were diverted from Dallas, people were stranded everywhere, and stress levels were… chef’s kiss… perfect for a comfort dog. I trotted in like Beyoncé entering a concert. Humans gasped. Kids squealed. Someone dropped their pretzel.

My humans handed out all my cards again, and a bunch of passengers subscribed to our website. I don’t actually know what “subscribed” means, but my human said it’s good, so I wagged my tail like I just won an award.

The kids noticed all the airline wings on my vest — every airline in the terminal has given me one. They always ask where I’m flying next, but I have to tell them the truth: I live here. I am large. I do not fly.

Well… except that one time I got on an airplane to help autistic children practice waiting in line and boarding. I wasn’t flying anywhere — just doing my job. One little boy whispered in my ear, “Do you ever get scared?” My human told him, “If you give her a big hug, she won’t be scared.”

So he hugged me tight, whispered, “I’m not scared now either,” and then proudly took my leash and walked me onto the plane like he was my captain. I was so proud of him — like he was my own pup.

Visiting My Airport Friends

We made the rounds:

  • Reservations crew
  • TSA (Hi Aaron!)
  • CLEAR (Love you, Daisy!)
  • Tin Lizzies (Ear scratches from Vega!)
  • Military Welcome Center (my favorite guys in blue – Greg, Jim, Jerry and sometimes Van)

It was slow in the military center, but my human still “taste‑tested” the brownies. He gives them a five-star rating! My other human shared her peanut butter cookie with me —I only get a few pieces, but I always get the last bite. The cookie lady is basically a dessert wizard. We’ll be back next week to test the next batch — for quality control, of course.

We stopped to see Aaron at TSA, Daisy at CLEAR, and Vega at Tin Lizzies. They all scratched my ears and gave me big hugs, which is exactly how I prefer to be greeted. They said they really needed me today with all the delays — and trust me, I knew it. I could smell the stress before we even walked in.

So many diverted and delayed flights. So many frazzled humans. And there I was, Holly the Comfort Crew Dog, ready to clock in like the professional I am.

I greeted everyone like it was my personal mission — because it is.

Humans From Everywhere

I met humans going to Florida, Cancun, Dallas, Chicago — basically all the places I dream of visiting someday when I finally get my own frequent‑flyer account. I posed for photos at the gates like a furry celebrity. Kids slapped stickers on their shirts and told me I was pretty.

Of course I’m pretty. I wake up like this.

My human always tells people, “It’s fine if her head gets bigger, just not her paws.” I’m still trying to figure out what he meant… Am I supposed to be worried? Am I going to tip over one day like a bobblehead?

Either way, I choose to believe it was a compliment. I’m a big dog with big dreams — and apparently, big paws.

My human told everyone that she “translates my thoughts” into this blog, and they all laughed like she was joking. Meanwhile I’m standing there thinking, thank goodness she doesn’t need Google Translate to read my mind. Can you imagine? “Select language: 🐶 Dog.” Awkward. I prefer the current system: she reads my face, my tail, and my dramatic sighs, and somehow turns all that into words humans understand. Works for me!

Time to Recharge

After all the hugs, cookies, and chaos, we headed home. I need to rest up because Friday is a big day: Integris Mental Health Center for Children. My kids always give the best hugs, and I can’t wait to see them!

Big day. Big dog. Bigger adventures coming soon.
