Holly’s Library Adventures: Encouraging Kids to Read

Holly went to the NW122 Library tonight and met a lot of new friends. The reading program is great to encourage children to confidently read out loud.

A Little Paw-Mail from Holly!

I trotted into the big library meeting room like I owned the carpet — tail wagging, ears up, ready for action. It wasn’t my first time there, but tonight I spotted new tiny humans sitting at tables, whispering to each other with big excited eyes. My regular kids puffed up proudly, like, “Yep… that’s our Holly.” I love a dramatic entrance.

Some of the kids were brand new, but they acted like they’d been waiting their whole lives to meet me. One little boy sat down beside me, leaned on me like I was a fancy memory‑foam pillow, and opened a Biscuit book. I love Biscuit. I laughed at the funny parts — out loud. He looked up at me like, “Did the dog just laugh?” Yes, child. I did.

While he read, the other kids waited their turns like polite little ducklings. They colored pictures of me — big ears, happy smile, sometimes an extra leg or two. Artistic freedom is important. My human needs to send more coloring pages to the librarian because the kids are running out of Holly pictures. This is a crisis.

I keep every picture they give me. My human puts them on the refrigerator, just like she did when her own humans were small. Not all dogs get artwork made in their honor. I know how special that is.

Then came the stickers. Oh boy. Kids LOVE stickers. They stuck them on shirts, on foreheads, on elbows… and on me. I looked like a walking scrapbook. I didn’t mind. Stickers mean love.

Everyone is waiting for my new trading cards to arrive. I’m up to three different ones now. I’m basically a collectible. I might start signing autographs with a paw stamp.

I kept glancing at the door, hoping one of my hospital friends might come — the child who asked if she could visit me when I go to public places after her being released over the weekend. Maybe next time. I’ll be ready.

Earlier that day, I was relaxing when Nugget came bouncing over like a furry pogo stick. He sat down beside me and asked, “Holly… what’s it really like at the library?” He’s heard all the stories — the hugs, the kids, the stickers, the famous Biscuit books — and now he REALLY wants to come too.

I tried to explain everything he needs to know: How to sit calmly. How to greet gently. How to listen during reading time.

But Nugget has one tiny problem… He. Never. Stops. Talking.

He talks during practice. He talks during quiet time. He talks while I’m trying to nap. He even talks while thinking about talking.

I told him he can’t come until he learns to zip his little doggy lips. He sighed dramatically, promised he’d practice being quiet… and then immediately started talking again. I just shook my head. He’ll get there someday. Maybe.
